1st Grade Physical Science: What’s the matter? 3/18 - 4/26, 5 weeks Essential Questions: - What is matter?
- How can we identify the different states of matter?
- How are solids, liquids, and gases similar and different?
- How can matter change state?
Enduring understanding: Students will understand that… - Understand how matter can be described and sorted by its different properties (such as size, shape, color, texture, etc.)
- Understand the specific properties for each state of matter (such as "a liquid takes the shape of it's container").
- Understand how matter can change from one state to another (by heating or cooling it).
Essential skills: Students will be able to… - Make predictions using prior knowledge or experience.
- Carefully follow steps to conduct a scientific investigation.
Essential knowledge: Students will know… - Everything that takes up space is matter (not energy like light or sound)
- All matter exists in at least one of the 3 different states: solid, liquid, and gas.
- The properties of solids, liquids, and gases (solids have a shape, liquids take the shape of their container, gases spread out and have no shape, etc).
- Heating and cooling can change the state of matter.
