Unit information

1st Grade Physical Science:

What’s the matter?

3/18 - 4/26, 5 weeks

Essential Questions:
  1. What is matter?
  2. How can we identify the different states of matter?
  3. How are solids, liquids, and gases similar and different?
  4. How can matter change state?

Enduring understanding: Students will understand that…
  1. Understand how matter can be described and sorted by its different properties (such as size, shape, color, texture, etc.)
  2. Understand the specific properties for each state of matter (such as "a liquid takes the shape of it's container").
  3. Understand how matter can change from one state to another (by heating or cooling it).

Essential skills: Students will be able to…
  1. Make predictions using prior knowledge or experience.
  2. Carefully follow steps to conduct a scientific investigation.

Essential knowledge: Students will know…
  1. Everything that takes up space is matter (not energy like light or sound)
  2. All matter exists in at least one of the 3 different states: solid, liquid, and gas.
  3. The properties of solids, liquids, and gases (solids have a shape, liquids take the shape of their container, gases spread out and have no shape, etc).
  4. Heating and cooling can change the state of matter.
