Forces and Motion

September 11 - October 20, 5 weeks

Essential Questions:

  1. What is a force? What kinds of forces are there?
  2. What makes moving things slow down?
  3. What makes things fall? What makes things balance?
  4. What do magnets do?
  5. How do we use forces in everyday life?
Enduring Understandings: Students will understand...

  1. Understand and identify a variety of forces that make things move and describe what causes them to change speed, direction and/or stop.
  2. Understand the ways that different objects may balance or topple in various situations.
  3. Understand magnetic force and how magnets interact with each other and different materials

Essential Skills: Students will be able to...

  1. Use previous knowledge and evidence to make predictions and form reasonable hypotheses.
  2. Record experimental data accurately using a data table

Essential Knowledge: Students will know...

  1. A force is a push or a pull
  2. Motion is the movement of an object
  3. Gravity is a force that pulls objects down to the Earth unless something supports them.
  4. Balance is when an object has equal amounts of the force of gravity pulling down on each side
  5. Friction is a force that slows down the motion of objects.
  6. Magnetic force attracts objects made of certain metal materials (like iron)
