Unit Information

3rd Grade Physical Science:

Sound and Light

September 11 - October 20, 6 weeks

Unit Description:
Students will investigate how sound and light interact with matter. They will construct their own instruments to explore how pitch and volume can be changed, and they will experiment with how light interacts with different kinds of materials.

Essential Questions:
  1. How is sound made?
  2. How can sounds be changed?
  3. What happens when light shines on something?
  4. How does light help us to see?
Enduring Understandings: Students will understand…
  1. Understand how sounds are made by vibrations.
  2. Understand how the pitch and volume of a sound can be changed.
  3. Understand the ways light can interact with matter, such as transmission, absorption, reflection, and refraction.
Essential Skills: Students will be able to…
  1. Follow the steps of an investigation carefully to obtain accurate results.
  2. Make detailed observations, both written and drawn.
Essential Knowledge: Students will know…
  1. Pitch is how high or low a sound is.
  2. Volume is how loud or soft a sound is.
  3. Light is transmitted if it passes through an object.
  4. Light is absorbed if it is blocked by an object.
  5. Light is reflected if it bounces off an object.
  6. Light is refracted if it is bent by an object.
  7. Seeing happens when our eyes collect reflected light from the objects around us.
  8. Lenses refract light to make objects appear bigger or smaller.
